Scaling and Root Planing

Periodontal disease can often be treated in its early stages with a cleaning treatment called scaling and root planing.  This special type of cleaning is done by a general dentist, dental hygienist or periodontist.  This cleaning removes plaque and tartar from beneath the gums and increases the chances of keepng your natural teeth.

A regular cleaning does not get to the bottom of the deep pockets that exist with periodontitis.  Without scaling and root planing, bacteria will continue to harbor, and the destruction to the supporting fibers and bone will continue.  Eventually teeth will become loose and tooth loss can occur.

Scaling removes plaque and tartar from below your gum line, controlling the growth of harmful bacteria.  Because this procedure goes deeper than a regular cleaning, your mouth may be numbed.

Root planing involves scraping and smoothing the root surfaces of the teeth.  Gum tissue can more firmly reattach to roots that are clean and smooth.

Scaling and root planing may be done in conjunction with other therapy such as locally placed antibiotics.

After your procedure, your mouth may feel sore and tender.  Your dentist may have you rinse with warm saltwater or prescribe pain medication if needed.  It is important to continue to brush and floss after each meal.

Once the scaling and root planing treatment is complete, a follow up appointment will be made within four to six weeks to check your gums and periodontal pockets.  Many patients do not require any further active treatment, only preventive care.  More frequent cleanings, periodontal maintenance, are required to monitor the health of the gums.  Maintenance visits will be scheduled on a three to four month interval with your dental hygienist.

Scaling and root planing is not a cure for periodontal disease.  It is important to maintain good oral care habits such as brushing, flossing, healthy eating habits and visiting your dentist for regular exams and cleanings.  If you smoke or chew tobacco, quit.  Be sure to call your dentist if you notice any tooth or gum problems.
